A good way to grab blueprints is to go where the civs and UTA are fighting and just scavenge the blackboxes from the wreckage. You don't need to kill the ships to get it, they just need to die.
Some smaller scale missions will give you less large ships to fight. Go where "this mission is being reinforced by the high civ/UTA strengh in the system" Or large conflicts between factions or to missions where you're taking out an enemy fleet and they have a flagship "boss" at the end. They will have the largest ships available for the system.
But getting to higher level systems is the fastest way to get lots of big ships to fight and scavenge.
Also, later on when you are starting to get into the capital ship ones, concentrate all your fire onto the one ship reguardless if you lose a ship or four in the process...just concentrate all your fire on the main goal and that is how I was able to unlock the Hammerhead ship...finally as they are so rare... and I love that ship as my main.
The bountyhunter ships are also incidentally the best ones in the game so you really rather want to get them, the mammoth is by far the best ship if you like to kill things. (in my opinion, your opinion may vary. the manta ray is also pretty godlike, although I eat through them long before they can pose any threat because turrets)
Oh it isn't easy, but once you build up your ships and the like, the Bounty Hunters will TRY to stop you but they will fail hard in doing so. I am still in Chapter 2 so this could change but I am around level 68 already though and I did chose to, out of bordom, visit every single planet system outside of the core but I will work on the core later on and all.
That was the first huge ship I unlocked.
Really? I like the newer mothership far more than the older one with how it looks...but then again, it is just me. To help with the REZ getting, just go to a mining area and choose to use both the Freighter as the major ship and other high Tractor Beam ships for your support and then select to control the most minor and most insugnificant of the ships to control and with that, just go get a coffee while the CPU "farms" for you. That is what I do and it works fine.
Oh, put all the ships on the Scatter mode so they don't all have to stick together in case your ship drift away while you are gone and also make sure that your shift won't drift into the dock while you are away getting your coffee or the like. This works great for me and it only takes around a half hour to max out your REZ and you don't have to sit and do the work.
Also, I understand what you are saying about the manuverability and the like but with almost all major ships, that is how it will work. I could go into the laws of "Inertia" and other rules of physics but I have yet to see a major ship act like a fighter...nor should it though...
Other than that, I wish you well but I highy suggest trying the "farming" technique that I described in my post.
