What is respect for?
I sometimes see Respect counters with numbers when I destroy bounty hunter ships... so what is Respect useful for in this game?

If your respect is high enough, Bounty Hunters will randomly show up to help you attack the gates between systems.

Also, if you have a bounty on your head, I believe that gaining more respect helps to reduce/nullify it.
