I don't know if I have ever been drawn into a game quite like I was with Bastion. The graphics are slick and stylish. The story and settings are intriguing and kept me engaged. The soundtrack... OH THE SOUNDTRACK; by far the best soundtrack in a game. I purchased the soundtrack with the game and it was the best decision of my life. The atmosphere this game creates is unmatched. Sometimes when I play games, I'm very aware I'm playing a video game. In the best of games I'm transported to another world. Every time I played Bastion, I was in Bastion. This game quickly ascended my rank of games from "oh this game looks sort of interesting" to "WTF, why didn't I play this sooner?".
All the background information about the story you need to know is something called the "Calamity" has struck, causing the death of many. Bastion is the safe place where survivors meet to rebuild. Other than this, you need to experience the rest for yourself.
The gameplay is hack'n'slash. The "kid" starts off with a giant hammer and a shield and periodically gathers more ranged and melee weapons like a bow, repeater, pistols, war sword, etc.. You can only carry two with you at once, but you can choose any two. Little pieces of materials can be gathered to upgrade every weapon (more damage, pass through multiple enemies, faster attack speed, etc.). Along with two weapons, you have access to a secret skill, which is an ability that makes you more lethal. The secret skills typically require the use of a specific weapon. You can only have one skill at a time, but again the choice is yours. Additionally there are spirits that can be equipped that further alter the style of gameplay. Examples of spirits include extra critical hit chance only when at full health, greater movement speed while blocking with your shield and the ability to carry two more health tonics. Furthermore, there are gameplay modifiers cleverly introduced as worshiping gods. The modifiers make the gameplay tougher, such as making enemies quicker and giving them more health, but also increase the experience gained. All this freedom of choice, along with a new game plus mode extends the replayability of the game.
There are a few other features in the game, but I believe they are best left for the player to discover for his or herself. If I haven't convinced you to purchase the game by now, mentioning these features will not matter. Overall, this game has incredible atmosphere that pulls you and makes you want to play more. The story is gripping and the gameplay is smooth. One of my favorite games of all time.
