why, why, why?
why does it force me to pick up crappy weapons in the middle of the mission without a way to choose whether i want to use it or not? i've gotten to the place where it forces me to pick up military carbin, that's such a bad weapon, why can't i just use my upgraded muskeet again?

I've actually come to like this weapon :-) But still, that was one of the annoying features. But if you think having the carabine forced on you is bad, wait 'till you get to the last level :-)

On my current 2nd playtrhough, I did at least know when I'd get that musket thing. That one is really bad since you can't aim with it -- it has high spread, but despite that it's still difficult to shoot into a specific direction. Luckly, there's an armory shortly after getting the musket :-)

I think there's an armory after getting the carabine, too. So the game does acknowledge that people might not want to use those things.

I sympathize regarding the carbine--it's pretty bad without upgrades. You can switch back once you reach an arsenal. (I believe every level with a new weapon has an arsenal somewhere within it.)
Just to let you know, the carbine requires opposite strategy to the musket; it has extremely long range, but takes a little time to fire if you want to be at all accurate.
Kargor: you can aim the musket. It aims better if you take the reduced spread upgrade, though --which you should. It's devastating against squirts and peckers.

It's gets better (sorry for the cliché). The carbine does get more useful with some upgrades, it works surprisingly well as a ranged weapon choice on The Kid's Dream challenge. In any case, you shouldn't have to forcibly suffer with it too long once you hit an arsenal or finish the level.

I have to say, I've found Bastion to be much more fun in New Game+ mode once you've finished the game through at least once, where you've got much more freedom to choose your weapons.

I can try the reduced spread upgrade, but I've never been able to get that dotted line. So the only way of aiming that I found was to try and face into the direction I want to shoot, which is very unreliable and you can't just turn around (you actually have to walk into that direction first. Plus, you can't turn into arbitrary directions, it's pretty much 90° steps only.

Thus, I've never used it for anything, and no success at all on the prooving ground, obviously.

muskeet is the only usable ranged weapon for me, actually. i mostly use to by clicking LT and then rapidly pressing X to shoot, works for me.

Love the musket!

I dismissed the carbine as a terrible weapon when I first got it, and only picked it up again on NG+. Now, upgraded, it's one of my favorites.
