Curious
I see people talking about how it's got a great story. How the story is so marvelous, but I was curious, what story? I get the narration for every little thing that happens, but it plays like an old platform game. Story doesn't drive you, getting done with the level seems to be the only motivation there. I really want to enjoy this game but I just can't get into it. Any wisdom that might make it worth the time?

Finish the game. Twice. You will be astonished or bored to death and able to go back to play call of duty.

meh, cod is a crap ip. Assuming that I'd like that just because I'm bored by this game is as juvenile as the average cod player. Thanks for the advice though. I'll just put this one in the "♥♥♥♥ I shouldn't have paid for" category with all the other crap that's piled up over the years.

According to your post in the other thread, you only played for about 20 minutes before getting bored. If your attention span is that short you're probably right--this game is not for you.

If you are still reading this post, then I apologize for my assumption about your attention span. That's just the impression I got from your other post. Perhaps you are actually interested in getting an answer to your question.
The story of this game does not feature astonishing set-piece moments, or anything else that would make you gasp in the first hour of the game. It is a very good story, though--mostly linear, but quite fascinating. The most groundbreaking part of the story is how it is delivered--primarily through narration that varies based on your actions, and never repeats itself. Even ignoring the delivery method, though, I found the story to be emotionally compelling, with a couple of nice plot twists. I don't know your taste in stories, of course, but I would advise playing through until the end of the level Prosper Bluff. If you still don't like it then, you probably never will.

I was interested in a genuine answer to my question but I encountered a small pile of vitriol at the beginning of each answer. You can judge a game based upon the community that supports it. Thanks for the answer, I think.

Wow lots of hate... take it out on npcs, not on the forums.

@Gunth - Don't read too much into the community. Many a great game has had a following of terrible people. Which is why for the most part, I never bothered to post on forums for years. I just lurked and was revolted and awed by the range of people in different games' "communities". Then I played a few MMORPGs..... and ya, "Don't hate the game, Ignore the player(s)"

* * *

But I too am curious. I've heard a few people that I know rave about this game, and from hearing them and watching a few gameplay videos I've started to wonder if the story is enough to make it work a purchase and the time to play it.

I'm not a fan of the gameboy-ish style of the graphics and animations (not a 2D fan in general and really not into the rainbow colors), but I love stories. Stories are 90% of why I play games. And as for action RPG? I enjoy, say, Diablo 1 for example, or N64 Zeldas. Most of the time aesthetics and a plotline are what draw me to a game... in this case I don't like the aesthetics that much, but maybe they'd grow on me, and I'm sure they would if the story was good enough, and the gameplay fun enough. Paper Mario comes to mind in that respect of hating the aesthetics but enjoying the game anyway.

But I'm still on the edge as nothing I've seen has made me want to play the game, but people keep pointing me in this game's direction. Is the story worth it? Is it really all that different? Is it presented or arranged in such a way that you don't care if it is different? Is it something that you'd want to go back in 2-3 years and play again? Or is it, while being a great story, somthing you play, enjoy and remember, but then loses its "spark"?

Interested to hear people's answers on the story (without spoilers please) and where they would put it on their "shelf". (example: Zelda- OoT, Kotor, Myst, Starcraft, and F.E.A.R. would be without a doubt on my "top shelf", while other games are great and the latest thing.... they are more like 2nd or 3rd shelf in the long run.)

No, you actually can't judge a game on this.
There are tons of examples wherer the game is great but has a hateful and immature community and the other way around.
I'd add that people having same taste doesn't mean they have the same behaviour or the same social skills.
Also, keep in mind that you will only get in touch with a small part of the players from a game, the majority not having the time or the will to come on these forums. Another reason not to judge the game on his (so-called) community.

Yes, the story is worth it. Different from what ? From what you heard, watched or read before ? I don't know, but they created their own universe with their own characters and the whole thing is not plagiarism, so it's an original story if that's what you mean. If you mean if there are clichés and stereotypes, yes there are, as in any story.

If you want to play a game just for the story you're missing out a lot on video games I believe. If you're searching for a scenario very complex with twists and turns to end on a breathtaking finnish, I'd suggest not wasting your time and money. If you're searching for emotions and dreams that only a few games can reflect, then go for it.

I would definitely go back in 2-3 years and play the game again. Not for its story alone, but for its atmosphere and the dream it puts you in.

I dropped the game first time, only to return to it in a couple of months.Indeed, beggining of the game is intriguing, but soon gameplay becomes boring until...certain moment, where game will drop a ton of things on you-plot twists, one after another, another half of weapons & abilities and then-final showdown and two choises-where you either forgive and let go of old world,or return everything as it was,but for a price...

I'm gonna give it another try. Maybe I'll see it differently this time around.

Same thing happened to me

I find the game is a bit slow to get started, but gets much more interesting. The story is pretty generic until you get a couple of hours into the game. The fighting is pretty bland until you face more interesting enemies and get better at it. The early weapon choices are all pretty similar and boring, and the early options don't really change much.

Both the story and the action gets more interesting as you go on, though.

I started playing the game just for the achievements, but then i was like "WOAH, this is getting interesting :)"

I'd say, for story based games, there are a few that are better than this one. Planescape: Torment, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Myth (a favourite of mine, though less hyped than the others), Thief.

But a game that pulls of being in that sort of league - while being a 2d platformer - is entirely exceptional. It uses the simplest of tools, yet ranks among the very best I've ever played.

Also, it has a better soundtrack than anything. Bar nothing. It has a better soundtrack than most movies.
