Just started playing
Hello everyone, I just started, but I'm not finding this much comfortable... My first created world lasted 5 minutes, after which I had to start another, cause I was stuck fighting mobs and kept dieing all the time... Second world is going slightly better, but I still don't understand several things...

1. How do I go back to surface when I explore a bit down? Ropes/Stairs?
2. How do I swim??? I died twice because I fell in water and was unable to go back surface, I pressed jump, as it is the button to swim normally, but the character kept jumping... into water!!!
3. How do I remove decorative elements? I put a chair, but it spawned in the wrong direction... I put a table, but I missed the correct spot I wanted... I put a chest, but I changed my mind for it's position...

All of this is pretty easy to find out in Minecraft, and I played that for 1 year now, so I know what surviving means... But I still need to get on road with Terraria, whatever I tried, just didn't work...

Help??

Kill yourself or see if luck favors you by rewarding you with a teleportation device.
Or you can dig your way back up, or place wooden platforms as you descend.

If you want to cheat then you can exit the world and then join it again, you'll be brought back to your current spawn point with all of your gear.

There is an accessory acquirable from randomly-placed chests(mostly ones close to large water bodies) that allows you to swim up.
Other than that, you'll have to place platforms or something so you can jump onto them and work your way to the surface. If the place is well-lit then you can dig a water lock.

~ = water
X = other solid block
. = air

begin with:
~~~~~~~~
XXXX~~~~
XXXX~~~~
XXXX~~~~
dig and end up with:
~~~~~~~~~
XXXX~~~~~
......X~~~~~
..X~~~~~~~

You can go in where the air pocket meets the water, jump up onto the pillar in the middle of the pocket and go off to do things without water getting in the way.

Build a hammer at a workbench or anvil. I think you can build a wooden one at a workbench for like 20 or 30 wood.
It's used to remove furniture, glass and background walls.

Getting out of water isnt your normal swimming you need to jump on blocks to get back up to the land. To escape caves you will just need to climb your way up, again using blocks. And third, you need a hammer to break chairs tables furnaces etc

Thanks for your answer.

So either I put the blocks to form a stair, or I just dig a stair during my journey... Looks like I will need a lot of blocks...

Is the guy in the video swimming in the beginning? So I suppose he has the tool you tolk about... As far as I see here doors are used to lock the water allowing the player to escape... Why has the place to be well lit?

And I see another detail, he killed a blue slime through the door, is the same possible through walls?

Can I use the hammer to break and pick up randomly found chests aswell?

There isn't much I can add to Ownomics' post but the orientation of objects depends on the way you are facing when you place them. If it is the wrong way round the first time you try then face the other way and do it again.

Yes, but only if they are empty.

Well you can use hammers to break ramdomly found chests too. One of the easier ways to get chests other then crafting them with wood and iron that you would probs need

Nice suggestion, iron is more usefull for other purposes indeed, and I was lucky to spawn above of an hole with a chest down there.

That video was wrong and didn't show what I meant exactly. Refer to the ASCII diagram.
As for light, it's just easier to dig. Most underground lakes don't come with a light source, so you'll have to dig a little bit to place torches with at least 1 solid block between the torch and the water so it won't fizzle out. This way you can see what you're doing; water locks aren't really something you can make blindfolded.

Some weapons can clip through doors. They can't clip through solid blocks though, I don't think.

Yes, including the shiny gold and purple ones. I think you can dig out the blocks under them to displace the chests too, but I don't remember.

Yeah its alot easier to find then craft, to be honest i never craft a chest because of the iron it takes to make. Hope this helps!

So if I need blocks it's better I only dig on my right or my left, to avoid creating myself traps under feet... at least till I have some practice...

And I will surely need some material from mobs to advance... Is the first armor hard to craft?

To escape from a lake another idea could be to dig on a side of the lake and then dig above my head, would it work?

Oh yeah just a heads up, if you find the demon alters DO NOT TRY AND BREAK THEM. The only way to break it is to use a pwnhammer and for that you need to defeat the Wall of Flesh
SpicyPepes Sep 7, 2013 @ 2:17pm
Well, digging under you isnt a total trap for you. Unlike Minecraft you can see caves under you, but its better to avoid that until you get practice of finding those caves under you

Yeah well.. I don't mind, anyway I don't have an idea yet of what he talks... I will find out eventually.. :) Anyway for this kind of games I use guides sometimes, I did a lot for minecraft, because I would have taken a lot of time to find out by myself, and also my memory is short...

Another thing, is there a way to pause the game? Or I must save and quit when I need to afk?

I was most worried about the "return to the surface issue"... I tend to dig a bit too much.. and then I am confused how to go back... I am not used yet to the sidescrolling visual...
Anarchisteve Sep 7, 2013 @ 2:20pm
You can change it in the settings so that when your inventory is open the game pauses but it is a PITA, IMO.
SpicyPepes Sep 7, 2013 @ 2:22pm
Mmmmm do what ownomics said, save and quit your game inorder to return to the surface with everything you have.
