Best Pre-HM Gear?
Well, pretty much what the title says.

I'm trying to get the proper gear going so I can actually make it to HM legit, but I have no idea what to use/find/craft.

I was going for Starfury, but have yet to find a single floating island, and I'm completely out of gravity potions (and doubt I can make them in significant enough numbers to matter anyway,) and I just got rocked by Skeletron with my 15 damage godly boomerang and platinum armor set with bonus +5 defense shackle.

Shadow armor (or whatever you make with it) doesn't seem viable, and I'm not sure I can kill the boss worm either anyway, and I don't think I have any Crimson biomes either, since I have Corruption.

I really don't know what to go with. My armor now is decent, but losing to Skeletron blows, which I think can be largely attributed to my boomerang, and I don't know if I can - or SHOULD go to hardmode without better.

Also, I have the full 400 health. I was finding life crystals littered everywhere.

Right, but farming bosses doesn't really give me an indication of what items I'll need.

Also, off-topic, but since you brough up boss farming, I have a sky arena set up, and I'm wondering if I can place corruption dirt on the ground 1 block thick, would it be possible to spawn Eater of the World (or whoever it is) AND it not spread via my tower to get to it?

for pre HM i was using Molten armor from Hellstone bars(Hellstone+Obsidian) along with the rest of the molten gear.

Unfortunately I cannot make Hellstone as my platinum axe isn't capable of cutting through obsidian. I take it I'll need to farm Eye for the bricks to make the special pick?

After building an ash bridge over a quarter of the Underworld, I killed the Wall of Flesh using the following:

First, I mêlée'd all its little mouths to death very very quickly (Molten Armor + Night's Edge), which was easy because they drop hearts like crazy so you're always at full health while you do it.

Second, I just ran away from it while constantly shooting at whichever part was most convenient with the Phoenix Blaster. I drank one potion at some point, but probably didn't need to.

Wasn't all that easy, but not hard either.

Nowadays, with Hardmode gear, it's pretty hilarious; I drop the Guide doll and kill the Wall before it gets past the spot where I dumped the doll into the magma. There's dozens of Demonite Block squares littering the Underworld where I killed it over and over for Emblems.

Oh yes, it's very very easy to make the item to summon Eyes of Cthulu (6 lenses, I believe) and it drops a lot of Ore with every kill. Make the pick to get Hellstone. Careful, it burns you on contact if you don't have the right accessories and there's usually magma all around.

The metal from the Eyes sells for a lot of gold, too, so even if you already have all you need you can sell it for several gold per Eye kill. Very good way to make money.

Note that you also need to kill the Eater of Worlds to make the Nightmare Pickaxe.

Yes, and thank you as well Tripotent.

I just destroyed what I think is one orb, and got the message about a chill. I don't know if he's going to spawn or not, and I've stopped for the moment to look.

I'm not understanding the logic of needing to destroy these orbs, which have all been surrounded by corrupt blocks which the best pickaxe before the ability to acquire a pickaxe capable of breaking these blocks cannot break... luckily I had some bombs on hand.

Break 3, and boss spawns. You'll get enough demonite to craft the pick ffrom 1 fight if my memory serves right, then dig all the way to the underworld and farm hellstones xD.

I had Crimson on my world instead (just started playing a bit over a week ago), but yes, 3 hearts spawned the boss for me (Chill, Screams, then it spawns) and a single fight gives you waaaaaay more than you need to craft the pick.

I actually just made a new world with Corruption so I'd see what it's like. Eater of Worlds is a segmented boss and you can get piercing/AoE stuff from destroying hearts (Vilethorn, I believe; I got two before spawning it, one of them Godly), so he should be very manageable even for a non-Hardmode character.
Stalinator Dec 17, 2013 @ 9:14pm
Yeah, apparently the first time I killed him (which was EXTREMELY easy, surprisingly) I had far more than I needed to finish the pick, so I figured I may as well kill him twice, since I had bombs left over. Now I have a full shadow set and the pick as well. Sucks a bit, since I got two of the shadow drops off the mini flying idiots in the corruption (the chest and boots) but they didn't give the visible effect, so I crafted them anyway. Had plenty of material, and farmed Cthulu 6 times.

As far as Eater was concerned, with 400 health and platinum armor (with my +5 defense shackle) the best and fastest method was to actually stand where the head hit with the axe I made from Cthulu drops and just tank all the damage. There really wasn't even a chance at him killing me. It was kinda sad, really...

I think I may have got screwed pretty hard on world creation.

Thing is, I have 3 areas of corruption. By that I mean 3 individual areas, one to the west of center, and 2 others to the east, spaced fairly far apart from one another. I haven't explored fully west, but I don't think it matters at this point, since apparently corruption spreads quite rapidly in HM, and being on a large map, I refuse to take the steps to stop the spread in the way outlined.

Should I consider this map a bust? I've place my "city" in the sky a bit, but I really don't want to play an all corruption world.

EDIT: sorry, 4 corruption biomes (I missed counted one as a single large biome, but missed the TINY desert biome in between), and of those, only one actually had anything of real corruption biome value, that being altars and orbs.

So the situation is 5% of my world, pre-HM, is corrupt, they're all spaced out in what I can only imagine to be the "perfect" spacing to corrupt everything, and of those, only one was ever worth a damn...

It doesn't sound good.

Pre-HM, the corruption only spreads through grass and you can rip that up easily, and the grass only travels along the surface. You can then stop the grass from regrowing by putting down 3 blocks of wood at the edge of the corruption. If you want to rip up the grass keep an eye out for purple grass a block or two below the surface.

You don't need to dig a tunnel all the way down to hell to stop the corruption if you're willing to dig sideways instead. Find the edges of the corruption, dig your 3-wide tunnel down to a bit below the bottom of the deepest chasm, then go horizontally across to the other side, then tunnel back down to make a U shape. Now you've sealed off that corruption. You'll also get a decent amount of ore and probably some treasure chests and gems while doing it. You can also use the existing caves to help... if you tunnel into a big cave you just need to resume tunneling on the far side. Just make sure there's enough space to walk and you'll have a successful quarantine.

When you activate HM it will create a new large strip of corruption and hallow across your world, starting from hell and reaching up to the surface. You might want to seal off parts of those, but you actually do want some underground corruption and hallow so you can get Souls as well as drops from the mobs down there.

Your world isn't a bust, it's typical. 5% is a normal level of corruption pre-HM. The distribution of the corruption is always going to be annoying to deal with, as the world generator will try to space it out just like you see. That tiny desert area probably isn't a break in the corruption biome, just a bit of surface desert that was overwritten when the world generator laid down the corruption. If you dig down through the ebonstone, you should find a connection beneath the desert that links the two corruption areas.

As for some corruption zones being useless, I find that doubtful. Every single chasm will have a Shadow Orb at the bottom of the corruption biome- the key knowledge is that most chasms will pinch off long before they hit the true bottom of the biome. All corruption biomes placed at world generation will have multiple chasms, most of which will pinch off. Near the bottom of the biome, there will be a long horizontal tunnel that should be within visual range of most, if not all, Shadow Orbs and Demon Altars. If you haven't seen the Orbs and Altars, you haven't fully explored the biome, and thus need to go deeper. The biome's true end is just under the Orbs.

As for armor, as others have mentioned, the Molten set offers the best flat defense, though the Shadow set bonuses may be worth the lower defense. Either way, a Molten Pickaxe should be high in your priorities, as it can knock out any non-corrupt ungrown block in a single blow. It'll make mining so much faster. I like to keep it and the Nightmare Pickaxe on me, as between the two you can rip through any material with relative ease.

As far as containment goes, if you don't want to go for full containment, strategic use of Sunflowers (available from the Dyrad NPC) will block the growth of corrupt grass. Failing that, a small pit, about three to five blocks wide, filled with clay or snow will also block the spread of corrupt grass- just watch for little tufts of grass or holes beneath the surface, as corruption can leapfrog around a barrier using those if they're in just the right spots. One tap with a pickaxe will remove grass, but be sure to fill in any holes you might accidentally create. The only biome truly at risk of destruction in HM is the Jungle, as spreading corruption will convert mud to dirt.
