Age of Empires Online to end on July 1st 2014 (along with GFWL client itself)
Microsoft are finally putting GFWL out of it's misery completely on July 1st 2014, however this also means that Age of Empires Online will also be ending according to a now deleted announcement on the AoE Online Support page.

Game Trailers Article

From the Age of Empires Online Support page (which has since been removed it seems):

Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.

Edit: It has gone from the store now but can still be installed by copy/pasting this link into a web browser:

So, the game that I purchased will no longer be playable? I call that a big refund. Thanks, Steam.

Well basically yeah, it will no longer be playable. Doubt you'll get a refund though.

Well it should still be playable (by creating an offline local profile) but any features such as multiplayer that rely on GFWL will not be, unless the devs patch GFWL out of the game completely (and add Steamworks instead for example like the Batman Arkham xxx games and Bioshock Infinite are rumoured to be doing)

I wouldn't mind if I can still play a single player game, but shutting down the game completely, I would have a problem with. I understand it's not really Steam's call, but they sold a product and as a customer, I expect to be able to play something I paid for.

This is bull. I want my money back.

Wouldn't Steam already have gone to this extent of developing a patch to take GFWL out of the game, so it would have the longevity of any other game on Steam...

One would hope Steam would make some type of announcement as to what will happen.

Capcom is switching it over to Steamworks with the release of Ultra in 2014.

This is the only MMORTS that I know of that's done by a legitimate company.. this makes me sad. I had played heavily when it was first released on Steam but took a 18 month break after I got tired of not knowing anyone else who plays. I FINALLY got a group of like 5 of my friends willing to play but now they dropped this. AoE Online seems popular enough, I wonder if its just not making any money or just not making enough.

It's not up to Valve to do that it's up to Microsoft.

Well it's not ending because they chose to end AoE Online, it's only ending because they are discontinuing the GFWL service completely (not just the PC marketplace which ends on the 22nd Aug).

I don't know how easy it would be to patch out GFWL completely from an MMO such as this and patch in Steamworks instead but I guess that MS won't bother.

I think I'll remember AOE:Online as, not just the worst AOE game ever, but the worst money I've ever spent on a game. And I say that with a Steam library full of games I've never even played.

Your tears when you don't get a refund on a game because its online component is ending will be so delicious.

Yeah, it's quite dumb. Kinda regret spending money on this game.

I really loved this game, sad to see it go =/ I sincerely hope MS patches it with steamworks, because this game is too awesome to die.
