With some testing it seems I can play one stage per reboot. This is completely unreasonable though, guess it's another game where I'm just waiting for a patch.
Edit 2:
Decided to muck with it more since the community doesn't exist yet and the devs are probably off for the weekend. It seems to directly relate to the steam overlay. Without the overlay the game plays fine, with it it freezes on level load.
The overlay itself is EXTREMELY slow and unresponsive when it's enabled.
Edit 3:
And after successful play for awhile it's back to freezing on either every load or every stage completion. Toggling to windowed to load a stage then back to full screen during it seems to work, but it freezes on completion. I'm too fed up with it now to see if in windowed it continues normally.
Drivers are up to date, hardware more than meets requirements, etc etc. Just a shoddy port at this point.

Yeah, turning off Vsync solved the freezes/crashes for me. The overlay is still insanely slow and frustrating to type in but it works.
