Frequent skips and eventual crashes

When I play, the game will frequently hang on a black screen for a few seconds, and come back to the pause menu (not the sanctuary), as if I had pressed select. Annoying, but more annoying is the fact that eventually it won't come back from the black screen, the program will just crash.

Anyone else had this? Were you able to fix or improve it at all?

So that's fun, it happened during an autosave, then when I came back it crashed every time I went out the door of the building I was in, until it finally just gave me a 'save file is corrupted' message.
