Ultra mode = no login

It makes no sense, but when I change "Visual Quality", and just that alone, to Ultra, changing nothing else, then it comes back with 'Unable to log into game servers. Offline mode only. Achievements, etc. won't work.' bla bla bla. Why in the @#$% does visual quality cause that to happen. Set it back to just High and it logs in just fine. Very disappointing. I have an i7 3770k with 16G of 1866 memory and a GTX 690. Ultra should be a joke, if even that, to this type of horsepower. But the game refuses to even try. Works perfectly 144FPS (monitor's locked refresh) offline on Ultra. But just won't log in.
