Some honest thoughts on this "new" game (gameplay video coming shortly)
So for those wondering about how this game actually differs in terms of content from the original release...
- More dinosaur models/textures
Now I say more models/textures because that's really all they are. Re-skinned dinos. For instance, there is a new large dinosaur (I don't know what it's called) that comes along side the t-rex. They both pretty much have the same exact AI, the same exact set of "moves" (they throw rocks at you and only eat you if you literally run into their mouth).
- Slightly improved AI, still overall really awful
As I'll demonstrate in the gameplay videos I'll post shortly, AI is really, really bad. Also most of the AI bugs are still entirely present over 1 year later. For example:
*Large dinos stick their head through walls. They will attack you through walls and can be attacked through walls. This has been persistent since the original release
*Small dinos (raptors) still line up like deer in headlights to be picked off. Driving a vehicle around and mowing them down is laughably easy. Further, an issue that has persisted since the original release - you can stand inside a room and just pick off raptors from the doorway without ever being touched (as I'll demonstrate in the gameplay video).
- Ugly character models, ugly textures, but some nice lighting effects (god rays looks cool).
"Cosmetic" customization basically consists of changing the color of your uniform.
- Weapons feel weak.
There is virtually no recoil or sense of power from firing a weapon. Sound effects for weapons are also still weak.
- Maps are still way too big.
Most servers host between 4-10 players. Maps are comparable to battlefield 2 in size. You can see how this can become a problem when a few teammates get lost (also I believe the difficulty still scales for more players, but correct me if I'm wrong here. If so I could see this being an even greater issue).
- Many game-breaking bugs fixed, I never found myself falling through the floor or getting stuck in a wall etc.
- Server stability still an issue
I disconnected about 3-4 times before finally finding a good server. All had low pings, and my internet is fast and reliable (50mbps down, 16mbps up).
- Vehicles still don't feel like they have any weight
All are floaty and halo-ish. If you like that stuff though then great, but I personally like vehicles to feel like they weigh something and aren't just balloons with an engine.
- Still barely anyone playing the game online, most servers virtually empty.
- Stiff, awkward animations.
Watching a T-Rex turn around is just hilariously bad (their feet don't even move, they just spin in place and start walking in the direction they want to go).
Gameplay video coming shortly as I said, but for now in summary:
Pros: bug fixes (I didn't fall through the floor in my play through or have a full crash), some stability fixes, some new skins for weapons/dino models
Cons: same AI issues (raptors line up for easy killing), many of the same bugs (enemies heads come through the walls), server stability issues still persist though not nearly as bad as the original release, maps are still too large, games move too slowly, not enough players online, weapons feel weak, most textures and models are still pretty ugly, gameplay gets dull and repetitive fairly quickly (I was bored again within 10 minutes of playing but stuck around simply to get some more gameplay video to demonstrate what I'm talking about).
*EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention, this game is a RETAIL release according to steam, and according to the devs this game is a "re-release" of a retail game, yet it says BETA on every single menu page in huge letters.
