Does this game force you to sign into GFWL on startup or is it just for multiplayer? I've had nothing but horrible problems with GFWL so it's a real dealbreaker. Also does this game have LAN?

System Requirements does state that GFWL is required for online play, so I'm gonna assume "yes".

Only had horrible experiences with GFWL (Games for Windows Live). Set up process for Fable 3 and Age of Empires 3 were so nasty... *shudders*.

This game looks cool though and on sale for $5.00 is crazy good. It could be free though but with GFWL, still a deal breaker.

The game use GFWL, but for MP only. If you just play SP nad doesn't care the achievements and other fantastic GFWL features you can play offline profile. You don't even notice the game using GFWL. And the MP was dead about 3-4 before.

Wasn't planning on getting it for multi since it's probably dead so this is good news. How long is the campaign? Is it any good? Does it have a decent skirmish mode with at least competent AI?

It was quite some time back that I played it.
But as far as I can remember skirmish and campaign were fine, but not musterpieces ;-)

I still haven't been able to play Fable 3 (or GTA 3)due to GFWL... AoE3 worked though, for some reason. Wouldn't be a problem is Microsoft had somewhat decent customer support for it.

I was about to purchase this game, just for the heck of it, as I've always wanted to try it. However I'll skip if forever now that I know it's GFWL infected.

I bought and downloaded this some time ago. I turned it on and signed in (I have Xbox Live and GFWL doesn't really bother me), set up my options, and started to play. I got through the first mission just fine and then it freezes on the loading screen to the second mission. Tried it several times and the it happened every time. I deleted all the local content and redownloaded it to try it again. The exact same problem happened every time. I haven't tried the game in a long while now and noticed it was on sale. I hope no one else has that problem because the game is completely broken and unplayable on my system. Not sure if it's a common problem or not and I didn't bother researching it, just a warning to others I suppose.

Agreed, GFWL is a mess especially their support system is beyond a joke.

Sad because this game looks promising. Oh well hopefully devs one day realise if a game requires GFWL they lose sales even though the marketing gurus at GFWL will tell them otherwise.

I've had minimal problems with GFWL but it is only needed for acheivements and online play. There is a LAN component, though I am yet to try it, and the campaign is quite enjoyable. I haven't tried skirmish yet though. It's worth it when it's on special, but I wouldn't spend a great deal on it. GFWL is a minimal issue given the dead MP. Still your choice though, obviously.

EDIT: Almost forgot - The game crashes sometimes, "abnormal game exit" error is not helpful, however seems to be primarily when loading the next level in the campaign. I save regularly and simply continue on from the last save when it happens and it "solves" the issue.

I had the same issue with it constantly crashing on the loading screen to the second mission. This was prior of my last reinstall of Win7 though. Tried it 2 days ago and now I'm done playing the game. Campaign and all. I really don't know how it got fixed or if was some Windows issue (Never surprising there...lol).
