Not compatible with Windows 8
Don't waste your time or money if you have Windows 8. The game won't launch--this is a well known problem all over the chat boards at EA. EA has responded with nothing. They don't seem to have any plans to fix this.

The issue is fine in 1.1 and 1.2 from what I've seen, but the 2.0 patch broke it. If you own Pirates and Nobles, you must be on 2.0 to play. Steam also forces you onto 2.0. So either way, you are stuck.

Update 3/23/2014 - If you redeem your key on Origin and download through there, it will work on Windows 8/8.1. EA has updated the DRM for the Origin-version ONLY to be compatible. It will not work through Steam.

They don't have any plans to fix this, since TSM has been abandoned. It's a dead game.

This sucks. Why isn't there a big disclaimer on the store page?

Thanks, I read this, started freaking out cause i'm attempting to dowload it at this very second. Luckily have windows 7. You are a life saver.

Steam really needs to allow 'sync at version X' for these sorts of issues.. Well I guess I won't be playing the game I just bought and downloaded for a while :/

damn really want to play this too

Yes it does.. feels wrong using it, because who knows what else it could be doing.. EA are the worst for supporting their games..

Does it really work? I think I almost attempted that earlier when I was looking for a solution. I remember reading the faq and it really emphasized that you needed sim medieval and the pirate/nobles expansion. I don't have the latter of course.

If you guys don't want to use that unofficial fix then you can always take you game key from Steam, register it to thesims3.com (make an account if you don't have one) and the game will show up in Origin (use the same login and password as your sims3.com account).

When you download it from Origin it doesn't automatically download the 2.0 version but the base original version so when you run it and the launcher asks if you want to update just say no. Then it runs fine.

Wow, this is crappy. I just bought this game and now I can't play it. Wonderful. I really don't want to download Origin, but I haven't been able to get the unofficial patch to work either.

Hey Mokoti.. I did that and it shows in Origin greyed out :/ Can't download it.. so stupid - either some form of region locking (they've decided that the code I've got from Steam is no good in Australia) or they've blocked it becaused I'm running Windows 8 and they know it has issues.. but either way.. poor form - there is no way of finding out what a greyed out item in origin means.
Perjoss Dec 27, 2012 @ 8:11pm
Mine was also greyed out but I uninstalled it from the usual 'remove programs' in windows and then I was able to download it from within Origin (it was no longer greyed out), I hope that helps.

(edit) I just read somewhere else that you can patch up to 1.3 but do not patch 2.0 as this will make it no longer work in win8, not tested this myself yet so try at your own risk (you may have to download the whole thing again if this info is not right)

Thanks for the Information i'm on Windows 8 and the game won't play! This is illegal surely to take money off people knowing that the game won't run. I'm looking into the legality surronding this!

By following the fix posted by 'Cooldead' I managed to get the game to start up in Windows 8. On the other hand, the "Play Now!" button (Once in-game) just doesn't do anything for me, and i'm stuck on the ambition screen.
Thank you for posting the fix, Cooldead, it seemed to do something and I made progress, any idea what I could try next?

Attempted the Origin method without updating the game. Plays perfectly on Windows 8.
