King's Quest Collection

King's Quest Collection

F**kin' HOAX! Basterds!
I got SO happy when I found King's Quest on STEAM, and was looking forward to showing my kids what WE played back then.
But no-oo... #1, 2, 3 and 4 are absolutely horrifying. No pxels or colors are alligned, and it all got to be a diaster.
#5 has a serious color issue, and has a hideous lag.
#6 just looks awful and hangs.
Finally #7 which DOESN'T EVEN START!!!

None of them works!
Not. One. Single. One.

In the requirements section when you buy the game there is no UPPER limit.
I guess this is all an issue with my OS.
I run Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, 8GB ram, 2,7GHz CPU and a Radeon 5450 256MB screen card.
Hardly unsufficient, but neither a monster machine.
Abe's world, Broken Sword and Defence Grid are all fine on this machine.

...so; STEAM! Tell me what the f**k this is all about?

Just so you know, this game runs in a popular emulator called DosBox, one of the things that the emulator does is intentionally slow your computer down. Back when this game came out, computers only really came in one speed around 0.066 to 0.1 GHz. Because it runs in this emulator, there are a lot of settings that frequently need adjusting to get it to look and act like a command line only computer.

I am not an expert in DosBox, but most likely you just need to adjust the settings for DosBox to better match the system you are running it on. (DosBox is free, just google it, you can set it up yourself copy over the files from the steam directory, and play around with it, for instance, the one I run myself is DosBox Portable, the version ment for portable thumb drives)

After hours of reading, i wont search more. I just spent hours on trying the games to run with a new dosbox version etc. But really, wasted 10€. If I buy I game on steam i exspect it to run and not to have more work than the original developers got by programming this game....
Have a look at the comunity/forum pages for the space quest collection.. Here is a thread for solving dosbox problems..

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1174559

I think this is what solved my maffed graphics for spacequest and assume it would work for kingsquest (which i havent got round to buying yet.)

Dosbox is a bit of a ball ache, but well worth tinkering with for the nostalgia value alone..

Shame on steam anyways for the lack of support..

Hope this helps..
Have you considered trying the gog.com versions? I have KQ7 and 8 and they work fine
Steam is Scum
Scumm, you mean ;)
so is it confirmed that they still havent updated these to work with win 7 or 8 64 bit?

Space quest or kings quest?

I can get them to run on emu in 64 bit, no problem,
but I wanted the pack,

is this really true?
why doesnt steam just put XP 32 BIT or older os ONLY

and how do tex murphy advents still work in 64 bit but not sierras
(I used to work for sierra online in oakhurst) im still shocked Id have to use an emulator instead of a coded workaround for the games series

anyone got updates

and SCUMM is for LA (lucas arts games) not sierra games, wrong company, both kick butt games tho
LA is now telltale games :P

and ive had the priveldge of working with Telltellale and for Sierra,

let me/us know about the OS requirement, seems odd steam would sell a series that wont run on 90% of machines now, unless u borrow grandpas computer (even my mom runs win7 64bit) and she is 68 years old
People looking for these games, check out the AGD remakes of 1, 2, and 3:

http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/games.html

These remakes are beyond great, they're practically perfect - and much better than the originals.
better well yes and no, great for suuure

also dont forget the QFG remakes I and II both rock as well

oh and kq9 which is just so so, original project was canceled and then this one popped up

They all run flawlessly on scummvm, just add the files to scummvm and it works.
Space quest compilation too
Except KQ7 and SQ6

just a note scummvm is meant for LA games .. but will work for some others

dosbox is better at most of the games that are for dos, not scummvm but yep! i love scumm lol
