I haven't bought collection on steam yet, I did however get it at a retail store a year ago.
In my case the patch that works best was the collection patch. not the individual ones
which had the same case art as this steam pages and is advertized as a collection so I assume its the same stuff.

The patch only works for the CD Version of the collection.

I'm tempted to reverse engineer this crap and make it work for the Steam version.

The GOG versions do work for the later games, KQ5-7, in part. MY issue is the servers appear to be in CYPRUS and my acct appears to have been hacked. MOREover, like Steam, they have staffing issues and there are still bugs in the games, ALL of the games. I have the original disks for Collections, and KQ4-8 and ONLY KQ8 will run on W-7Pro IF you have the XP modules installed. LOVED these games when first issued and played them many times, but on STEAM and GOG they became a real HASSLE and aggrevation. Game ONE and TWO are based on DOS codex, requires INPUT of instructions via KyBD. The later issues incorporated the Point-click and mouse controls. Some of the puzzles will probably be WAAY over the head of many kids (anyone under 40) as they reference Mythology and some musical clues that would require some knowlege of musical tones and composition. SHAME on STEAM and GOG for suckering us into re-buying these classics, only to find the WILL NOT RUN, even on XP system, much less 64-bit. I rebuilt and old system with XP, just to play some of the later games, KQ-8 being the exception, and EVEN with fresh install on SOLO INTEL processor @2gb speed, and slowing down, it still would not work, due IN PART to the antiquated codex. Not being a programer, other than BASIC, I gave up after a week of tweaking. Got out my HP 8086 desktop, which ran the games FINE back in 2000, and they still do NOT run. BEWARE of the CYPRUS site, as it may be corrupted and Steam is a CONTROL freak with what appears to be a serious paranoia issue. Took six months to get my acct back after being hacked. That said, I have several games on Steam, some run. some do NOT. Everquest can NOT find a server, and my FINAL BOSS Save Game on DS3 got wiped, so I can NOT use the DLC. OBLIVION does run OK, and Deus Ex, but controls are a bit hard for my OLD fingers and brain. GAME ON.

Could not be more thankful for this, to be honest. Will admit: It would have been a lot easier if this had been sorted/added IN the Steam install of the game.. But it's better than nothing :P
Also: When using the fix, be sure to use the new shortcuts und not the Launcher, as the fix just disables it.
Gaming Rig's O/S is: Win7 X64, in case anyone has any questions regarding if it works on 64BIT systems or not.

Wow, success! Thanks for that link. I can now play the Kings Quest Collection from Steam on my Windows 8.1 OS! I only played part of KQ5 SOOOO many years ago, and now I can play the collection! Only fix I saw that seems to work so far and it's funny how many people are pissed off they can't get it working and this is so simple. Thank you. This link needs attention by those having troubles. I wonder why the patch wasn't included in the Steam version...

I tried downloading the KQCollectionDBUpdate.exe before purchasing it, but norton pick it up as: Trojan.ADH.2 with High Risk. Is this a false report?

scanned it with trend micro and it is showing no form of trojan, i trust trend microm over any other virus program as it has caught things the others didnt

Download DOSBOX, it will let those old 16bit games run on 64bit OS.
