my cube subdivides into a sphere?
In silo 2 i dont know if a accdentally hit a setting but now when i subdivide a cube, rather than becoming a smoother cube my cube turn into some obsure polygon then eventually a circle. how to I fix this?

Can yuou show a screenshot of what is happening?

When you subdivide a cube it does get more rounded...
That's normal for subdividing... What is it you were tring to do?

The reason that guy's cube is not going square is due to the edge loops he has added around the cube...

If you add someedge looks near the borders of your cube before you subdivide you will get a result like the one seen in that video =]
no problem, glad I could help =] Have fun modelling :P

Where is "Partial Subdivide" tool?
There is no such thing as partial subdivide. Now if you need an edge to retain its shape you can select it and hit crease edge. If you need to reduce the effect of a subdivide then you add edge loops like mentioned.
Like Patrick Griffiths mentioned adding edge loops to your edges will solve that problem. Use the Split Loop tool to make this easier. Or, you can just select your edges manually, connect the edges and then use Slide Edge to move it into position. Using Slide Edge maintains your geometry integrity whereas a simple move won't adhere to the surface normals.

For example, moving an edge along a sphere with the Move command and arrows will not follow the surface of the sphere but instead move the geometry away from the face normals. Using Slide Edge will move the edge along the face normals without changing the curvature of the sphere. (I hope that made sense!)
