Straight to my vote: the game is "somewhat" playable after patch 7, not total garbage like on day 1, with some mods the score could reach a 6/6.5 (average), though some moments on campaign/battles can be rated easily as an 8: unfortunately these moments happen not so often and don't last very much.

But i'm downvoting it because the game has still SERIOUS BUGS, GAME DESIGN FLAWS, and the BEHAVIOR OF CA IS TOTALLY OFFENSIVE on its fans.

These especially make me totally pissed:

-Combat system is totally arcadish and not enjoyable: fastest battles of the franchise, magic abilities, BS flags, TORCHES, formations don't matter, blobbing, almost no "gameplay" unit diversity between factions.

-AI alternates moment of cleverness to totally stupid moments, especially on sieges, where sometimes the AI freezes, and, if you are the defender, you are forced to sally out, or wait the 60 minutes timer goes off (siege AI on Rome I and Med 2 was a lot better, and those AI were not the top: after 3 months from release is still not properly patched...).

-Boring and broken naval battles, alongside a horrific non-working political systems.

-Stripped down features from previous games (guard mode, family tree, fire at will for legionaries and so on).

-CA keeps releasing BS panoramic screenshots or trailers, saying they are made with Rome II engine (they are not, they are trying to cheat more people with that BS!) instead of creating cutscenes especially designed for the game (a big lack on the game)!

-Instead of properly patching the game, they are keeping releasing DLCs over DLCs. Till now we have blood&gore, nomadic pack, greek states pack, caesar in gauls, and this doesn't stop. And that stuff needs patching too...

-Lies over lies on marketing pre release campaign; i'll mention only one aspect: performance. They said a lot of BS about how well Rome II would be considering this aspect. You can even read "extremely scalabe experience" here on Steam description (yeah, my ass!). They didn't release a DEMO prior to release for THE FISRT TIME IN THIS FRANCHISE: now i know precisly why the didn't make one.
The game has seriously engine flaws: the worst are no proper multicore support, and the fact that CPU (and not GPU!) is used for some intesnsive gfx tasks, which brings to high CPU bottleneck-->low FPS, especially on melee.

-Lack of immersion elements: no connection with generals, no family tree, almost no faction intro videos/cutscenes, boring and repetitive musics.

-Horrific UI: they have gone from the perfection of Shogun 2 to the actual crap!

And i can continue to go on, but let's stop here...

In the end: ALMOST NO CHALLENGE (sometimes the challenge turns out as frustration), NO IMMERSION, NO FUN LIKE ON PREVIOUS TITLES.

And this is really a SHAME, considering the HUGE AMOUNT OF BEAUTIFUL ASSETS made for this game, such as beautiful units and their huge variations of helms, shields armours and so on; along awesome landscapes and cities and huge number of factions.
Moreover this is double shame, considering that many aspects of the game where way way better on the old Rome I and on the previous Shogun 2.

Why didn't they take the best parts of these 2 awesome games and combined to make a proper Rome II?

Yeah, you're right. In these days i'm trying DeI, and many of the flaws of the game are severely reduced.
Plus, in recent patches, CA his trying to fix some others (perfromance, from day 1, is considerably improved) and is doing some nice things (see the last Season and Wonders free DLC).
Let's hope that they continue this way!

mods cant save this game from the mediocre developers or money grubbing publishers. sad to say because this was my favorite game franchise.

Have you played Medieval 2 and Rome 1 lately? The AI sucks balls. The units are shit in Medieval. The only real thing I miss is building 20 buildings in every city. And having proper defenses if I have the gold for it.

(This is the last thing i will add to your rewiev. I promise.)
Nobody needs to pay you for making mods. Most people i know make mods because A: For the funs and gigles. And B: to fix/add some things that hasn't been added and needs to be added. And this dosn't exept the bad games. And that last 25% of bugs and glitches that can't be fixed by modders is up to the develepors. And if they don't find the bugs and glitches then report them. And the reason i wrote that you worked at a gaming company is that you said that you work ICT and i thougt that you may work at another gaming company. And let's just say that CA and Sega's work strategy is like you say. And Poseidon is the greek god of the seas, he has nothing to do with thunderbolts. Yes there are UI mods on the workshop if not then just try searching the total war forums. One last thing. You're not the only one i have charged on steam for not liking this game.
And a good day.

As i already said, those are not UI mods... they simply change the skins, not the interface structure...

You like the game? Good for you, i respect your opinion, and envy you. But chariging on me and saying that i hate all Rome II fans or saying that it's up to me, like it was me the problem and i was the only one that doesn't like the game (maybe you didn't see what the top rated steam review, or metacritic, say), well...

Happy gaming to you ;)

"But ever since you don't like the fans, developers, every single bit of this game or anybody who plays this game... well that's just up to you"

LOL!!! Yeah, i hate all Rome II fans and devs, i get up early on morning to pray Zeus and Poseidon in order to make them launch some thunderbolts on their houses^^
Me working on "another gaming company"? Who said that? It seems that you haven't a clear vision on reality and like inventing things.
Me fixing some glitches and bugs? and who pays me? You? Why i should wasting time fixing a game for free that i don't like? BTW 75% of the problems are not fixable by people like me and you, but only by who made the game and have the source code.
I made many mods in the past for TotalWar, for example my 2 Shogun2 mods are on top 3 on "top rated of all time" mod category, here on the workshop: that was a game worth spending time on improving it, because the base game was good (and CA didn't try to promote it with lies over lies such as for Rome II)

I only mentioned the mods just so that you can enjoy the game more. Press more juice from the Lemon. But ever since you don't like the fans, developers, every single bit of this game or anybody who plays this game... well that's just up to you. And there are pleanty of UI mods here http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse?searchtext=&childpublishedfileid=0&section=items&appid=214950&browsesort=trend&requiredtags%5B%5D=UI
And just because you work at another gaming company that dosn't mean that CA and Sega have the same work strategy as your company. And the reason i mentioned the free dlcs is becuase to show you that CA dosn't only care about their wallets. And ever since you work on computer programing then why don't you fix some glitches and bugs with your own mod and publish it at the steam workshop huh?

2/2
I work on ICT, and reading you talking about the "DLC team" and the "patch team" is really laughable^^ Do you really believe in what you have said?? Then you clearly have no idea of the definition of a big software work (such as is Rome II) and a development team and all that is involved.
Free DLCs? who cares about 3 copy&pasted factions (i could have done the same work in 3 hours and released as a free mod) if the game it's far from what promised or what was made on previous titles? And there are TONS of people thinking the same way, so it's not my problem...
+Vastator+ Jan 2, 2014 @ 10:35am
@midgint
That's simply my opinion about THE GAME, not ABOUT THE MODS.
If i'd have to rate the mods i'd do it in other places, since here it's for expressing an opinion about the game as it is.
BTW mods don't solve the big flaws and design problems of the game named above, they surely improve some aspects but,in my opinion, don't make the game worth playing. Playng Rome I with Roma Surrectum 2.6 or Shogun II/Napoleon is way way more worth for me.
UI mods?? Where?? There are no ui mods, there are mods that changes the skin of Rome II base interface, but the UI is the same. And BTW this is not the firt problem of Rome II...
